LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Aaron Carter says he is done talking about ex Hilary Duff.

The 26-year-old singer dated Duff between 2001 and 2003, but the couple broke up amid rumors he cheated with Lindsay Lohan. He proclaimed in March he would "spend the rest of [his] life trying to better [himself] to get back" to the actress, and confirmed in April he "absolutely" still loves her.

Duff heard about Carter's declarations of love, and expressed her confusion in an interview with BuzzFeed earlier this month.

"I keep seeing that, that he keeps doing that," the actress said. "I don't know how I feel. I mean, that was so long ago, and obviously I'm still married, and I have a baby and we kind of just ... don't know each other."

Carter acknowledged Duff's unenthusiastic response, and responded to her comments in an interview with Wenn.

"If I'm too open about how I feel then people wanna nag and pick and poke at me," he related. "I don't know Hilary either. She don't know me and I don't know her. I just need to shut up now about it. I think it's time."

"She's got a kid and she's married and I'm not trying to be that dude," he continued. "That's not my intention. Hilary will always hold a very special place in my heart."

Duff and retired NHL star Mike Comrie have been married since 2010 and share a son, but separated in January. The actress recently said a reconciliation with her estranged husband is still possible.
