Miley Cyrus could be jailed for desecrating Mexican flag during show

Desecrators of the Mexican flag and anthem could be fined as much as 250 times the country's minimum wage and jailed for up to 36 hours.

MONTERREY, Mexico, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Miley Cyrus is under criminal investigation in Mexico following a stunt she pulled with a Mexican flag during a show in Monterrey on Tuesday.

Cyrus, 21, was performing a show on her Bangerz tour in the Mexican city when one of her dancers began slapping her fake derriere with a Mexican flag, TMZ reports. When news of the incident reached Mexican officials, the Nuevo Leon state congress said it wanted to prosecute the singer for disrespecting a national symbol.

Desecrators of the Mexican flag, shield or anthem could be fined as much as 250 times the country's minimum wage ($1,200 per TMZ) and jailed for up to 36 hours, as established in the 56th article of Mexico's Ley sobre el Escudo.

According to the celebrity gossip site, Mexican singer Paulina Rubio was once fined $4,000 for posing nude in a magazine spread while draped in a Mexican flag.
