Andrew Garfield says nude photo hack violates 'divine womanhood'

TORONTO, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Andrew Garfield is outraged by the celebrity nude photo hack.

The 31-year-old actor addressed the scandal in an interview with The Daily Beast published Wednesday. Unknown hackers shared dozens of nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and other celebrities August 31 on 4Chan, and Garfield said the leak is "disgusting."

"It's this violent, abusive violation of womanhood -- of divine womanhood," he declared. "It's violent, and it's misogynistic, and it's revolting, and it's another example of what this distance has enabled us to do -- it's enabled us to be disassociated from each other."

"There's enough awful shit coming from it that hopefully we'll get to the point of, 'OK, wait a second,'" he continued. "What's scary is that we haven't reached that point yet, and there hasn't been a referendum put on it. The Internet is the new Wild West."

Artist XVALA intended to include life-size nude photos of Lawrence and Upton in a Cory Allen Contemporary Art installation, but nixed the exhibit after he received negative public response. XVALA will display life-size nude self-portraits instead.

Garfield will appear in Silence in 2015.
