LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- CeeLo Green has apologized for his controversial remarks on rape.

The 39-year-old singer and producer returned to Twitter and tweeted an apology Tuesday evening.

"I truly and deeply apologize for the comments attributed to me on Twitter," he wrote. "Those comments were idiotic, untrue and not what I believe."

Green came under heavy fire over the weekend after he compared rape to a home burglary and implied women can only be raped if they are conscious when it happens. He later deleted the tweets and his Twitter temporarily.

"When someone brakes on a home there is broken glass," he wrote. "Where is your plausible proof anyone was raped?"

"Women who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!" he declared. "If someone is passed out they're not even WITH you consciously! so WITH implies consent."

Many found the comments particularly offensive because the singer recently pleaded no contest to slipping ecstasy into a woman's drink. Green was sentenced to three years of probation and 360 hours of community service on Friday after being charged with one felony count of furnishing a controlled substance.

TBS canceled Green's reality series, The Good Life, after the sentence and remarks, but sources say the cancellation was solely based on the program's ratings performance.
