LOS ANGELES, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Nick Cannon is "barred" from discussing his and Mariah Carey's divorce.

The 33-year-old actor confirmed his split from the 44-year-old singer Thursday, but is reportedly not allowed to discuss further details per their confidentiality agreement.

Cannon would face "severe financial penalties" were he to address the breakup, a source tells TMZ. Carey, however, has the right to announce the details of the divorce on her own terms.

Cannon and Carey met on the set of her music video for "Bye Bye" in March 2008, and married a month later in the Bahamas. The former couple have two children together, 3-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe, and have been living apart for a few months. Cannon has said his "main focus" in the breakup is taking care of their children.

Cannon will reprise his role as Devon Miles in VH1 movie Drumline 2: A New Beat later this year. Carey released her 14th studio album, Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse, in May.
