LOS ANGELES, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Kim Kardashian and Kendall and Kylie Jenner enraged fans by appearing to text during a moment of silence for Michael Brown at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

The 33-year-old reality star and her 18-year-old and 17-year-old half-sisters were spotted on their phones during the tribute at the ceremony Sunday. Rapper Common led the moment of silence in recognition of Brown's killing and the subsequent protests and clashes with police.

Angry fans lambasted the sisters on social media after the incident, with many calling them selfish and self-absorbed. Others joked the sisters were on their phones to research Ferguson because they were unaware of the reason for the tribute.

Brown's funeral took place in Ferguson, Mo., on Monday. Kim Kardashian and her sisters have not addressed the texting incident.
