LONDON, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Richard Attenborough, the British actor who played the kind but perhaps misguided creator of Jurassic Park, died Sunday, his son said. He was 90.

The actor died around lunchtime at a nursing home where he and his wife lived, his son told BBC News.

In an entertainment career that spanned six decades, Attenborough gained attention for his roles in Brighton Rock, The Great Escape, Jurassic Park and The Miracle on 34th Street.

He made a transition into directing later in his career, winning the best director and best picture Oscars for Gandhi in 1983.

Attenborough had been in a wheelchair the past six years after he fell down some stairs. His last project was directing Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer in 2007's Closing the Ring.
