LONDON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Benedict Cumberbatch completed the Ice Bucket Challenge on Friday.

The 38-year-old actor was nominated by Tom Hiddleston, and took part in the challenge to support research for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease. Cumberbatch nominated Harvey Weinstein, Kylie Minogue and race car driver Lewis Hamilton before being doused in ice water a surprise four more times.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has raised over $50 million thus far for ALS research. Cumberbatch will appear in The Imitation Game and provide voice credits for Penguins of Madagascar and The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies later this year.
