ATLANTA, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Gucci Mane has been sentenced to 39 months in prison.

The 34-year-old rapper pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in May, and received his sentence in federal court Wednesday.

Gucci Mane, born Radric Davis, has been incarcerated since his arrest in September 2013. The charge is based on two different incidents where he was found illegally carrying a handgun. He was indicted in November 2013, and has previously been convicted for battery, assault and numerous other parole violations.

Davis asked for permission to serve his sentence on the West Coast to avoid local influences in Atlanta. He will be required to serve 28 months in prison before the possibility of release on three years probation.
