LOS ANGELES, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Actor Tom Hanks is trying his hand at something decidedly more techy with the release of his typewriter app Hanx Writer.

The iPad app mimics the sound and looks of an old-fashion typewriter, something the Apollo 13 actor is apparently partial to.

"No longer must you surrender modern luxuries, like the DELETE key," Hanks said in a press release. "With Hanx Writer, you'll hear the rhythm of your work with SHOOK SHOOK or FITT-FITT."

Stuart Westphal, the vice president of games and interactive with the app's development studio, Hitcents, said the app is one-of-a-kind among other typewriter apps on the market.

"It was Tom's energy and enthusiasm that made an impression on me," he said in a statement. "I wanted to capture that spirit with this app. Nostalgic...yes! But also a tool that composes well and is enjoyable to use more than once."

The best part is the app is free.
