NEW YORK, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Sylvester Stallone wanted to strangle Arnold Schwarzenegger during their old rivalry.

The 68-year-old actor discussed his longtime rival Thursday on The Tonight Show. Stallone and Schwarzenegger both starred in a number of action movies in the 1980s, and the box office competition made for heated personal one-upmanship as well.

"We were very competitive," Stallone told host Jimmy Fallon. "Yeah, I think 'hated' is a good word."

"I wanted to strangle him," he admitted.

Stallone and Schwarzenegger are on friendly terms today, and have co-starred in a number of movies in the past decade.

"I think he's brilliant, what he's done and what he's accomplished," Stallone said of the actor. "He's had three different careers."

Stallone and Schwarzenegger will next appear in Expendables 3, in theaters Friday.
