James Garner dead at 86

Police say actor James Garner died Saturday of natural causes in his Los Angeles home.

LOS ANGELES, July 20 (UPI) -- Handsome leading man known for his roles in The Rockford Files and The Notebook, James Garner, died Saturday at his home in Los Angeles, police said. He was 86.

Police, who were called to Garner's home Saturday night, said he died of natural causes.

Garner had a notable career in both television and the big screen. He starred in TV's Maverick in the 1950s, The Rockford Files in the 1970s and most recently played the grandfather in Eight Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter.

His film career included roles in The Children's Hour, The Great Escape, Victor Victoria and Murphy's Romance.

Kaley Cuoco Sweeting, who worked alongside Garner in Eight Simple Rules, took to Twitter on Sunday to express her sadness at his death.

Garner is survived by his wife, Lois Clark, and their two daughters, Kim and Gigi.
