Melissa McCarthy's heavily promoted but critically panned comedy, Tammy, failed to live up to studio estimates, bringing in $32.9 million over the five-day weekend.
The film only cost $20 million to make, but it's McCarthy's worst-ever opening. The Heat, also starring Sandra Bullock, earned $39 million in its first weekend, while Identity Thief, with Jason Bateman, took in $34.6 million.
"There's nothing wrong here," Warner Bros. distribution chief Dan Fellman told THR. "It's true that tracking was more favorable for us going into the weekend, but this was a $20 million movie. This is a movie Melissa did by herself with her husband. It doesn't have a big supporting star like Sandy [Bullock]."
Horror film Deliver Us From Evil, another weekend opener, came in third with $15 million for five days, while 22 Jump Street, last month's success story, took in $9.4 million.
Earth to Echo, Disney's alien robot story, placed sixth with $8.25 million.
