NEW YORK, June 22 (UPI) -- Come Aug. 24, the Broadway production of the musical Newsies will be no more, Disney Theatrical Productions said Sunday.

The musical, based on the film of the same name in 1992, will have run for two and a half years by time it closes.

Newsies was unexpectedly profitable enough to help Disney Theatrical Productions bounce back after two previous flops — Tarzan and The Little Mermaid.

Newsies was initially developed for amateur and high school stages, but it was so successful it was moved up to the big leagues on Broadway.

More than one million people have seen the musical and it has grossed more than $100 million.

Disney didn't offer a reason for closing the musical.
