LOS ANGELES, June 20 (UPI) -- Zoe Kravitz did a lot of research and dropped 20 pounds for her role as the anorexic Marie in the film The Road Within.

While speaking about her preparation for the part at the film's Los Angeles premiere Wednesday, the 25-year-old actress revealed to Us Weekly that she "struggled" with eating disorders in the past.

"I think all young women do," she said. "There are a bunch of images that are thrown in our faces all the time about what we're supposed to look like at 14, 15, 16. It's confusing. I think every woman can identify with that struggle."

Lenny Kravitz's daughter said she tried to lose weight for her role in "the healthiest" possible way, but noted that its was not really a healthy thing to do.

"I ended up drinking clay," she shared, "because it cleans out your body and fills you up. I was eating like a Mason jar of pureed vegetables a day and running."

While the Divergent actress had no trouble shedding pounds with her restrictive diet, she described the experience as "awful" and said she would never "encourage anyone" to do it. She also said that it had been really scary to find out about all the online support communities that exist for people with eating disorders.

"There are pro-anorexic websites called 'pro-ana' sites, where [these people] talk to each other and support each other," Kravitz said.

The Road Within, a film about about a boy with Tourette's Syndrome who embarks on a road trip with his late mother's ashes, is in theaters now.
