LOS ANGELES, June 15 (UPI) -- 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2, two critically acclaimed sequels, dominated the weekend box office.

22 Jump Street, which offered its own meta-commentary on the inedibility of sequels, opened with $60 million, an astonishing 65 percent more than its predecessor. 21 Jump Street, which also starred Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as an unlikely pair of undercover cops, earned $36.3 million back in 2012.

These numbers make Jump Street the highest-grossing live-action comedy since 2011's The Hangover Part II.

"Give big kudos to Jonah and Channing," Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer said in a statement. "Their chemistry is something special. They work hard and play hard and love what they're doing; that shows, and audiences responded in a big way."

The weekend's other big opener, Dreamworks' PG-rated offering, How to Train Your Dragon 2, pulled in a respectable $50 million. The original earned $47.5 million in 2010 (adjusted for inflation), and it received an A CinemaScore from audiences.

Angelina Jolie's Maleficent came in third place with $19 million, while Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow came in fourth with $16.2 million.

Shailene Woodley's tearjerker, The Fault In Our Stars, earned only $15.7 million, a 67 percent decline from last week's juggernaut premiere.
