CHICAGO, May 21 (UPI) -- Roger Ebert once called Steve James' Hoop Dreams "the greatest American documentary."

But James has now turned his directorial eye toward Ebert himself, in a forthcoming movie about the legendary film critic.

Life Itself, which bears the same name as Ebert's 2011 memoir, features commentary from famed directors and collaborators who discuss his love of film, his often heated relationship with Gene Siskel and his battle with cancer.

Martin Scorsese and Steven Zaillian produced the film, which hits theaters July 4.
