NEW ORLEANS, May 20 (UPI) -- On Monday, Sandra Bullock was the surprise commencement speaker at Warren Easton High School in New Orleans, where she was greeted with rousing cheers from students she has helped support.
Bullock, who received an Oscar nod for 2013's Gravity, has spent much of the last few years in New Orleans, where she adopted her 4-year-old son Louis. She's also dedicated part of her life to the students at Warren Easton High School, donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to help rebuild the school after Hurricane Katrina.
She gave students advice for the road ahead, about finding the "joy" in life, learning from their failures and reminding them, "do not pick your nose in public."
"You know at Warren Easton, you are loved and appreciated and supported for what you have to offer," she told the crowd. "I was trying to remember my graduation and, oddly, I couldn't remember anything. I remembered how good I looked and then I went back and looked at pictures and I really didn't look so good."
"I only remember the moments where I tried beyond what I thought I could do, and I do not remember the failures because I didn't [fail]," she added. "Nothing is a failure; it's just not supposed to work out that way, because something better is supposed to come along."
