Ryan Reynolds film 'The Captive' booed at Cannes

CANNES, France, May 19 (UPI) -- After years of big-budget failures, like The Green Lantern and R.I.P.D., Ryan Reynolds had undoubtedly hoped that his latest effort, The Captive, would mark a career revival.

But it failed to impress discerning audiences at the Cannes Film Festival, who booed the Atom Egoyan film when it screened on Friday.

The low-budget thriller stars Reynolds as a man whose daughter is captured by pedophiles, a role that director Egoyan said would "completely redefine" the 37-year-old actor's flailing career.

Critics panned the film, however, describing it as "ludicrous" and "crass."

According to an US Weekly report, the film's reception was so disappointing that Reynold's skipped the cast's after-party for a "low-key late-night snack" with his wife Blake Lively.

"Ryan definitely seemed a little on edge," a source told the mag. "Wouldn't be surprised if he skipped out on his party because the film is getting terrible reviews."
