NEW YORK, May 14 (UPI) -- Christie's in New York pulled in a record total $745 million at a sale of contemporary and post-war art at auction on Tuesday.

Two works by Andy Warhol, in particular, sold for a combined $100 million.

"Well we've actually made history tonight," Brett Gorvy, Christie's head of post-war art, told BBC News. "It was a momentous evening."

Warhol's 1962 portrait of Marilyn Monroe, "White Marilyn," sold for $41 million, while his 1964 silkscreen, "Race Riot," sold for a whopping $62.9 million. Both works sold for much more than their estimated values.

Tuesday's event set the world record for sales totals at a single art auction.
