'Spring Breakers' sequel in the works

The upcoming flick "is not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original.”

LOS ANGELES, May 7 (UPI) -- A sequel for the 2012 dramedy Spring Breakers is in the works and will make its debut in the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

Wild Bunch and Muse Productions will produce Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, in which the Spring Breakers "battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them." The film will be directed by Jonus Akerlund and Irvine Welsh has already penned the script. “It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original,” said Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval.

The original Spring Breakers was written and directed by Harmony Korine -- of Kids fame -- and starred Selena Gomez, Ashley Bensons, Vanessa Hudgens and Rachel Korine as four college girls who get involved with a drug dealer while vacationing in Florida.

The sequel will reportedly have a combination of new a old cast members. This year's Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 14 until the 25.
