NEW YORK, May 6 (UPI) -- Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour was spotted in a rare moment of vulnerability during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for her Costume Center at The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Monday morning.

The 64-year-old fashion legend, famous for her serious demeanor, was photographed smiling throughout the event and looking emotional as she embraced First Lady Michelle Obama, who attended the gathering to pay tribute to Wintour.

"I'm so impressed by Anna's contributions, not just to fashion but to this great museum," Obama said of Wintour's work with the Met. "This center is for anyone who cares about fashion and how it impacts our culture and our history."

Both fashion icons looked chic and elegant during the ceremony in shift dresses. Obama wore a floral green and cream Naeem Khan while Wintour kept it classic in a silver Chanel dress.

The Met's Costume Institute houses more than thirty-five thousand costumes and accessories "that represent five continents and seven centuries of fashionable dress, regional costumes, and accessories for men, women, and children, from the fifteenth century to the present."

Other celebrity guests at the event included fashion designers Zac Posen, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Later on Monday the Met celebrated its annual gala, which was themed "white tie" this year.
