NEW YORK, May 5 (UPI) -- Katie Couric could be mulling a return to her old Today show stomping grounds when current co-anchor, a five-months-pregnant Savannah Guthrie, goes on maternity leave.

Sources told the New York Post that NBC and Couric are in "preliminary talks" about a temporary position.

Couric, whose daytime talk show, Katie, was canceled in December, was hired as a "global anchor" by Yahoo! last year. Though Yahoo! has a relationship with ABC News, her contract doesn't prevent her from working with other networks.

“The reality is that it is primarily internal discussions," a source told The Wrap. "It's unclear whether Katie will want to do this and be available to guest co-host and whether she would be in NBC's plans."

The source also said that Couric "maintains" a friendship with Today hosts Matt Lauer and Al Roker, which would make her a good substitute for Guthrie.
