NEW YORK, April 25 (UPI) -- Wolverine will face his doom in upcoming Marvel comic, Death of Wolverine.

The landmark issue will be preceded by a "3 Months to Die" storyline this summer. The plot finds Wolverine stripped of his accelerated power to heal, and will culminate in a four-issue Death of Wolverine finale in September.

"For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, he's been the eternal victor," Marvel editor Michael Marts tells Entertainment Weekly. "He almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who's been around for a hundred years?"

Wolverine debuted in The Incredible Hulk #180 in 1974. The character possesses healing capabilities that allow him to recover from virtually any wound, and also slow down the aging process. He is a member of mutant superhero team the X-Men, and is well-known for his adamantium skeleton and claws.

"He's reflecting on his own life as he's reflecting on his own death," author Charles Soule says of the four-issue finale. "We wanted to have the reader do that at the same time. In each issue, we're focusing on a different aspect, or a different quintessential Wolverine."

"Wolverine being Wolverine, violence tends to find him," he continues. "I hope that when people finish it, they'll feel like he died in a way that was true to him."

Marts adds that Marvel has approached Death of Wolverine "from a standpoint of finality, of closure." It appears that the character's death will remain final.

"You're gonna be entering into a world without Wolverine," Marts says. "That affects not only his teammates, but also the Marvel Universe at large. We've got a lot of things in the works already."

The first issue of Death of Wolverine will be released on September 3.
