LOS ANGELES, April 24 (UPI) -- Justin Bieber was detained by customs officials at LAX Airport in Los Angeles on Thursday, after the 20-year-old Canadian pop star returned from a trip to Japan.

Bieber spent at least two hours with officials but would probably not be prevented from entering the county, a source told People.

"Our CBP officers are charged with enforcing not only immigration and customs laws, but they also enforce over 400 laws for 40 other agencies and have stopped thousands of violators of U.S. law," U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement to E! News, though they would not comment specifically on Bieber's situation.

The incident occurred days after the White House responded to a popular petition calling on the administration to deport Bieber for "threatening the safety of our people."

Bieber was arrested in Miami on DUI and reckless driving charges earlier this year.
