LOS ANGELES, April 14 (UPI) -- The seventh season of Mad Men premiered Sunday night to a considerably low number of spectators. According to E! News, the AMC period drama pulled in 2.3 million viewers, a staggering one million less than it had for its Season 6 premiere in April 2013, when 3.4 million people turned it to watch the show. Furthermore, only 1 million of Sunday viewers fit in the show's key 18-49 demographic.

"Sharing a Sunday night premiere episode of Mad Men on AMC is a uniquely satisfying experience as a fan, and something we never take for granted as a network," Charlie Collier, AMC president, said in a statement. "Congratulations and thank you to Matthew Weiner and his remarkable team, both on-air and off, for, once again, treating us all to the rarest of entertainment air."
Sunday's episode marked the beginning of Mad Men's final season, which will be aired in two parts titled "The Beginning" and "The End of an Era." AMC announced in September of 2013 that the seven final episodes will premiere in the spring of 2015.
"In an era where high-end content is savored and analyzed, and catch-up time is used well to drive back to live events, we believe this is the best way to release the now 14 episodes that remain of this iconic series,” Collier said at the time.
Mad Men airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on AMC.
