LOS ANGELES, April 14 (UPI) -- Director Gary Ross has said his upcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel East of Eden starring Jennifer Lawrence may be divided into two separate films.

“We may break it in half, into one generation and the next. And that’s what we’re talking about now,” Ross said during an interview at Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television.

The writer-director previously worked with Lawrence in the 2012-blockbuster film The Hunger Games. During the interview, he said East of Eden might be the first project he takes on since directing the adventure thriller.

“It’s one of the things that is sort of on my plate, [that] I’m interested in doing,” he said of the film. “I’m not certain if it’s the next movie. Part of that is my schedule. Part of that is Jennifer’s schedule as well. But it’s definitely something that we intend to do.”

Ross's interview was the latest in the series The Hollywood Masters, moderated by THR’s Stephen Galloway. Previous guests have included Alfonso Cuaron, David O. Russell, Judd Apatow, John Singleton, Alan Horn, William Friedkin and Sherry Lansing.
