LOS ANGELES, April 11 (UPI) -- Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm has released a new short film in honor of the hero's 75th anniversary.

The 53-year-old writer and artist served as producer for the Batman television series during the show's 1992-1995 run. He has a longstanding relationship with the DC animated universe, and also worked on The New Batman Adventures (1997-1999) and Batman Beyond (1999-2001).

The new short is a stylized, animated noir piece titled Batman: Strange Days. The film pays homage to one of villain Hugo Strange's first appearances in the Batman comic books.

Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. The superhero has been portrayed in countless comics, television shows and movies since, including Christopher Nolan's popular Dark Knight trilogy of films.

"I wanted to go back to Batman's roots," Timm told Comics Alliance of Strange Days. "There's something really cool about the way Batman looks in the [early Bob Kane] comics."

"I just think he's a great character," he continued. "He's always been my favorite superhero ever since I was a kid. He's so versatile as a character. You can do so many different kinds of things with him... They're all equally valid."

"I'm never going to be done with Batman," the artist asserted.
