NEW YORK, April 10 (UPI) -- Sean Penn will direct Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem in his upcoming film, The Last Face.

The Last Face was written by Erin Dignam, and is a romantic drama set in Africa. Theron and Bardem play doctors who are both deeply involved with humanitarian efforts. Bardem must choose between his love for Theron and his dedication to his work after the pair become swept up in political unrest on the continent.

Bill Pohlad and River Road Entertainment are in final negotiations with Penn to produce and finance the movie. Bill Gerber and Matt Palmieri will also serve as producers.

The new film will mark Pohlad and Penn's fourth collaboration. The two have previously worked together on Into the Wild, Tree of Life and Fair Game.
