March 31 (UPI) -- Nerd culture is everywhere these days -- from superhero films to San Diego's increasingly commercialized Comic Con -- but it's still tough out there for school-aged geeks.

Wil Wheaton, who's propped up his nerd credentials with roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Big Bang Theory and Felicia Day's The Guild web series, knows a thing or two about standing up for the things you like.

In a recently resurfaced video from last year's Comic Con in Denver, Wheaton delivers a heart-warming response to a little girl's question about dealing with anti-nerd bullies.

"When you were a kid, were you called a nerd and how did you deal with it?" she asked.

"When I was a little boy I was called a nerd all the time because I did not like sports, I loved to read, I liked math and science and I thought school was really cool and it hurt, a lot," Wheaton said.

"Because it's never okay when a person makes fun of you for something you didn't choose," he continued. "We don't choose to be nerds. We can't help it that we like these things. Don't let them make you feel bad because you love something."

"When a person is cruel to you, it has nothing to do with you," he added. "It's about them feeling bad about themselves. They feel sad. They don't get positive attention from their parents. They don't feel as smart as you. They don't understand the things that you understand."
