March 31 (UPI) -- Frozen has surpassed fellow Disney/Pixar film Toy Story 3 as the number one animated movie of all time.

The film has earned a total $1.072 billion, which makes it the highest-grossing animated movie in history. Its earnings surpassed Toy Story 3's $1.063 billion over the weekend.

The smash hit is now the number ten biggest global blockbuster, immediately behind The Dark Knight Rises. Frozen has been lauded by critics and audiences, and won Best Animated Film at this year's Academy Awards.

The film is inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Snow Queen, and tells the story of the fearless princess Anna. Anna must journey to find her older sister, Elsa, after the latter inadvertently traps their kingdom in eternal winter with her powers.
