March 28 (UPI) -- Angelina Jolie stars in a fantastical new trailer for the Sleeping Beauty-inspired movie Maleficient.

The 38-year-old actress stars as the title character of the film, which tells the untold story of the Sleeping Beauty antagonist. Maleficent curses Princess Aurora to die before her sixteenth birthday in the 1959 Walt Disney film after she is not invited to the girl's royal christening.

The new movie portrays Maleficient as a beautiful and pure young woman who suffers an act of betrayal after her kingdom is invaded. The act is a catalyst for her turn to evil, and she places a curse on the newborn Aurora.

The trailer features the movie's fantastical and magical setting, and highlights Jolie as the dark and troubled Maleficent. Elle Fanning stars as the teenage Princess Aurora.

The new trailer will officially debut during the 2014 Kid's Choice Awards on Saturday, March 29.

Maleficent will be released in theaters on May 30.
