"Yeah, we've known this since last year," Charles admitted on the Late Show. "It's been one of the greatest gigs for me in my entire career, but at the end of the year, my contract was up and I was just ready to kind of move on."

The actor expressed surprise that word of Gardner's death did not get out early. "It is kind of amazing," he said. "We've been able to keep it a secret for an entire year."

"It's tough to leave stability and structure," Charles said of his departure. "I just want to say to all the fans that I really appreciate all of your comments... It's meant a lot."

When asked about the future, the actor honestly replied, "Oh, I have no plan."

The Good Wife will continue without Charles Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
