Neon Trees lead singer Tyler Glenn has come out as gay.

The 30-year-old singer made the announcement in an interview with Rolling Stone that will debut later this week.

"I've always felt like I'm an open book, and yet obviously I haven't been completely," Glenn confesses to Rolling Stone's Caryn Ganz. The singer says he has been aware of his orientation since he was young, but chose to keep it a secret for years.

"I had my crushes on guys throughout high school, but it was never an overwhelming thing until my twenties," Glenn says. "Then I'd be dating girls and in love with my straight friend and it was the worst feeling in the world."

The singer was raised as a Mormon and still identifies as such, even though the Mormon church forbids homosexual behavior and says such relations are against the will of God. "We were always taught, and I hate this word, 'tolerance,'" Glenn says of his church. "The only time that felt different was when the Prop 8 thing came up." The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent an estimated $22 million in 2008 to fight against same-sex marriage in California.

Glenn says he first opened up in October 2013 when he told several of his friends and family members about his sexuality. Many of the songs he wrote for Neon Trees' upcoming third album, Pop Psychology, address his struggle to come out of the closet.

The full interview with Glenn will appear in the March 28 issue of Rolling Stone.
