Scarlett Johansson says Dylan Farrow's letter to Woody Allen was 'irresponsible'

Scarlett Johansson spoke out about the Woody Allen scandal in a recent interview and said that Dylan Farrow's open letter to Allen was "irresponsible."

The 29-year-old actress spoke to the Guardian about her upcoming film Under the Skin, and also used the opportunity to address the child sex-abuse scandal surrounding director and friend Woody Allen.

Accusations that Allen sexually abused his adopted daughter, Dylan, first emerged in 1993. The director has consistently denied the allegations and was not prosecuted in the case, but the charges were revisited this year in February. Dylan penned an open letter to her father that once again claimed abuse, and the published piece set off a renewed firestorm of controversy around Allen.

Johansson has served as a muse to Allen in recent years, starring in three of his films: Match Point, Scoop, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. The two share a friendship in addition to their creative relationship, and the actress has said that she would be prepared to "sew the hems of his pants if he asked me to."

Johansson was one of the actresses Dylan named when she questioned Hollywood's continued collaboration with Allen in the letter.

"I think it's irresponsible," Johansson said. "To take a bunch of actors that will have a Google alert on and to suddenly throw their name into a situation that none of us could possibly knowingly comment on? That just feels irresponsible to me."

"I don't know anything about it," the actress continued. "It would be ridiculous for me to make any kind of assumption one way or another."

Johansson said she is "unaware that there's been a backlash" against Allen in light of the renewed allegations, and expressed her continued support for the director. "I think he'll continue to know what he knows about the situation, and I'm sure the other people involved have their own experience with it," she said. "It's not like this is somebody that's been prosecuted and found guilty of something, and you can then go, 'I don't support this lifestyle' or whatever. I mean, it's all guesswork."

Johansson will star as an alien in her new film Under the Skin. The film is a dark science fiction piece adapted from Michael Faber's novel of the same name, and will debut on April 4 in the U.S.
