March 14 (UPI) -- The Brian Kirk-directed space drama Passengers won't make it to movie theaters for its scheduled April 3, 2015 date.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote Thursday that the film is experiencing delays following Rachel McAdam's departure from the cast.

Weinstein Co. acquired the U.S. rights for Passengers during the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, but it reportedly pulled out from the project following McAdams' retreat and the production delay that followed.

Creative Artists Agency is reportedly shopping around for new buyers in the U.S.

Filming for Passengers, which was set to begin on April 7, 2014, has also been pushed back until a new female lead is found.

The film is set to star Keanu Reeves as a "colonist aboard a spacecraft carrying 5,000 sleeping passengers to a new world." Reeves' character eventually becomes lonely and wakes up one of the characters and the two later realize "it's up to them to save everyone on the journey."

Reese Witherspoon was set to play the lead character, Aurora, before McAdams.
