March 12 (UPI) -- Popcorn Time is a computer application that allows free streaming of all the latest movies and television shows, but it's not clear if the whole operation is entirely legal.

The recently launched program -- which does not currently exist as a mobile app -- is available as a download for Windows, Mac and Linux, and offers the latest hits, including Dallas Buyers Club, American Hustle and Gravity.

Described as the Netflix for pirated content, the program bypasses the extra steps needed to search for torrents, then download and play the media files. The site doesn't actually host the content, but provides a pathway to other users who do.

Simply search for the movie you want to watch and click to play.

So is it legal? Not entirely.

"Depends on where you're from, really. Once again: we're using torrents, so if you really care, you'd better google what the legal situation around these protocol is where you live," the frequently asked questions section on Popocorn Time's website says.

One of the developers -- identified only by his first name, Sebastian -- addressed the issue in an interview with TorrentFreak.

"We don’t expect legal issues. We don’t host anything, and none of the developers makes any money. There are no ads, no premium accounts, and no subscription fees or anything like that. It’s an experiment to learn and share."

"As a designer I love the challenge of simplification," Sebastian aded. "Take something hard for the common user and make it usable. I have a lot of friends who don’t understand torrents and I wanted to make it easy and effortless to use torrent technology."
