Duck Dynasty star Sadie Robertson says she intends to use her fame to promote family values.
The 16-year-old is the granddaughter of Duck Commander founder Phil Robertson and daughter of the company's current CEO, Willie Robertson. She appears regularly on the show, and also runs a YouTube channel named "The New Different" with friend and Preacher's Daughters star Kolby Koloff.
"When we began Duck Dynasty, we weren't starting it for fame," Robertson told Fox News. "We started it to get the message of God out there."
Robertson says the show helps to fill a hole in today's current television programming, "We could have easily done a reality show like everyone else... it's our faith that catches people's eyes because sadly, it's not something we're used to seeing [on TV] these days."
"I think people use fame as an excuse to lose their faith," the young star said. She later continued, "I get a tweet at least once a day that says, 'I hope Sadie Robertson doesn't turn out like Miley Cyrus.'"
Robertson stressed that she and Kolby Koloff started their YouTube channel in order to give "words of encouragement" to young people as they experience the "daily struggles that teenagers go through." She admitted that they sometimes receive mean tweets and comments, but she thinks "it's worth it" if the channel helps others.
Robertson has kept busy with other projects as well. She sang a duet with country star Allison Kraus, and debuted her own line of prom dresses during New York Fashion week last year.
Duck Dynasty came under fire when patriarch Phil Robertson made comments widely interpreted as homophobic in an interview with GQ earlier this year. He was suspended from appearing on the series but has since been reinstated, and Sadie says the show must go on. "It just takes one person to take a stance and begin doing something different," she said. "We think [the show] has done a good job of getting out God's message."
