LOS FELIZ, Calif., March 7 (UPI) -- Dr. Preston Burke is returning to Seattle Grace Hospital for one last episode.

Isaiah Washington will reprise his role as the cardiothoracic surgeon who left Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang at the altar in an upcoming episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Washington was written out of the hit ABC drama in 2007, but series creator Shonda Rhimes decided to bring him back for one last show because it's the “full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”

Oh announced in August that she would leave Grey's at the end of the tenth season because she felt like the show had explored "all the avenues" that a character could possible explore.

“It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should,” Rhimes said. “Burke is vital to that journey.”

Since leaving Grey's Washignton has gone on to work on films like Blue Caprice and Go for Sisters. He currently stars in the CW's post-apocalyptic drama The 100.

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
