LOS ANGELES, March 3 (UPI) -- Ellen DeGeneres may have broken Twitter records Sunday night with a star-studded selfie, but ABC is probably more excited about the Oscar telecast's relatively high ratings.
The three-and-a-half hour long show managed to bring in 43 million viewers, the largest audience for an entertainment program on any network since the Friends finale in May 2004.
Ratings young adults ages 18-34 were also at their highest levels since 2007. That's good news for DeGeneres, who also happened to be the host back in 2007.
DeGeneres' selfies, hashtags and meme references (think Pharrell's hat) might have had something to do with it, especially in an era when awards shows provide ample fodder for social-media sharing.
The Oscar ratings were up 4 percent from 2013, when Seth MacFarlane hosted.
