PARIS, June 20 (UPI) -- French fashion designer Jean-Louis Scherrer died in a Paris clinic Thursday, following a long, unspecified illness, his representatives said. He was 78.

"Jean-Louis Scherrer was a couturier who was an emblem of the 1980s," Stephane Rolland, who worked with Scherrer for 10 years, told Radio France Internationale.

"It was one of the first labels to really thrive at that time. It was huge. What Yves Saint-Laurent represented for the Left Bank was what Jean-Louis Scherrer represented for the Right Bank," Rolland said.

Scherrer created frocks for the Christian Dior and Yves Saint-Laurent fashion houses before starting his own fashion label in 1962.

The Japanese group Seibu bought the company in 1990 and Scherrer briefly remained as artistic director until he was fired after arguments with the new owners about the label's finances.
