The popular scribe penned dozens of non-fiction and fiction books, including the best-selling novel "The Cardinal Sins," during his 50-year career. He also was a longtime columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times.

His final book, "Chicago Catholics and the Struggles within Their Church," was published in 2010.

CBS News confirmed his death, but did not disclose the exact cause of it.

Greeley suffered a brain injury when he fractured his skull in 2008 after his clothing got caught on the door of a taxi as it pulled away and knocked him down, CBS said.
