Prosecutor: 'In Cold Blood' not factual
GARDEN CITY, Kan., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- "In Cold Blood" -- Truman Capote's best-seller about the murder of a Kansas family -- is not completely factual, a prosecutor in the 54-year-old case said.
Duane West, 81, said Alvin Dewey -- the investigator in the Clutter family murder, and hero of Capote's book -- initially did not believe a prison inmate who identified two suspects who were later convicted for the murders, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.
An incarcerated former employee of the Clutter family told police Perry Smith and Richard Hickock were responsible for the deaths of the couple and their two teenage children.
"Dewey said it wasn't them," West said. "Dewey was convinced it was somebody local who had a grudge against Herb Clutter."
Capote wrote investigators believed the prisoner and Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent Harold Nye immediately went to visit the Hickock family farm on his own. In the book, Nye convinced Hickock's parents to tell him about the gun their son recently purchased -- the same kind used to kill the Clutters.
Recently unveiled KBI documents indicate this was not how events played out, the Journal reported.
The documents showed the KBI waited five days before four officials visited the farm.
West said Capote's book exaggerated the role of the KBI.
Cooper to star in gold digging series
SILVER SPRING, Md., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Chris Cooper will star in "Klondike," a Discovery Channel miniseries about gold digging in Canada's Yukon region, Zap2It.com reported.
The series is based on Charlotte Gray's novel, "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike," which follows six strangers as they search for gold in the 1890s in a remote, small town.
Ridley Scott will executive produce and "Prison Break" writer Paul Scheuring is set to script the show, Zap2It.com reported Friday.
The miniseries is scheduled to being production in March, though an official air date has not been announced.
Cooper, who won a supporting actor Oscar for "Adaptation," has also appeared in "American Beauty," "Seabiscuit" and "Lonesome Dove."
Springsteen honored at gala
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A lineup including Elton John and Neil Young performed in Los Angeles as the Recording Academy honored rock icon Bruce Springsteen for his philanthropy.
Springsteen joked at the Friday gala that he was not deserving to be named the academy's 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year, USA Today reported.
"Whatever philanthropy I've ever done usually involved playing the guitar," he said. "I was going to play the guitar anyway."
MusiCares is an arm of the Recording Academy that provides critical assistance to musicians during times of need.
"We are bad with our money," Springsteen said of musicians. "We love too many and the wrong people. We are the wrong people."
The evening at the Los Angeles Convention Center began with an auction to raise money for MusicCares, followed by the all-star lineup performing Springsteen songs.
Mumford & Sons performed "I'm on Fire," Elton John did a dramatic reading of "Streets of Philadelphia" and Kenny Chesney performed an acoustic version of "One Step Up."
Alabama Shakes, Neil Young, Patti Smith, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, among others, also performed.
The evening ended with Springsteen himself performing a few songs, including "We Take Care of Our Own," "Thunder Road" and "Born to Run."
Upton gets third SI swimsuit issue cover
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Kate Upton was selected to grace the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue for the third year in a row, the American model revealed.
Upton will be wearing a coat instead of a bikini top for the "Polar Bare" theme for the 2013 edition of the swimsuit issue. The shoot took place in Antarctica, E! reported.
"We can finally talk about Antarctica!!!!!...Took us 2 months to thaw out," Upton tweeted after news of her cover shoot was leaked.
Upton first appeared on the cover of the issue in an inset in 2011 and commanded the entire cover to herself in 2013, E! reported.
She joins a small list of models who have been on the front of the issue multiple times -- Christie Brinkley in 1979-80, Elle Macpherson in 1986-88, Paulina Porizkova in 1984 and 1985, and Tyra Banks in 1996 and 1997.
