SANTA FE, N.M., Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Author Evan S. Connell has died in an assisted-living facility in Santa Fe, N.M., his family said. He was 88.

Mike Waller, his nephew by marriage, confirmed Connell's Thursday death to The New York Times, but the cause of it was not immediately reported.

Connell -- a Kansas City, Mo., native -- penned the books "Mrs. Bridge," "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge," "Son of the Morning Star," "The Patriot," "Deus Lo Volt!" and "Lost in Uttar Pradesh," as well as collections of poems and short stories.

He is survived by a sister, Barbara Zimmerman, two nieces and a nephew, the Times said.
