Second Winehouse inquest ordered

LONDON, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- A new inquest into British singer Amy Winehouse's July 2011 death is to begin next month, officials in London said.

Winehouse, 27, died after years of drug and alcohol abuse. The official cause of her death was deemed to be accidental alcohol poisoning.

TMZ said Monday a second inquest into the circumstances of her death has been ordered after it came to light Assistant Deputy Coroner Suzanne Greenaway was not experienced enough to oversee the recording star's autopsy, but was given the job by her coroner husband, who resigned from his post earlier this month in the wake of the scandal.

It is unclear if Winehouse's body will be exhumed as part of the new inquest, TMZ said.

Douglas' son injured in Pa. prison

NEW YORK, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Cameron Douglas, the 34-year-old son of actor Michael Douglas, suffered a broken leg and finger in the Pennsylvania prison where he is an inmate.

Cameron is serving a nearly 10-year sentence in the Loretto, Pa., prison for selling crystal meth, then smuggling heroin behind bars for himself.

The New York Post said Cameron was seriously injured this fall after an unidentified crime-family captain put a $100 bounty on him for being a "rat" after his psychiatrist, Dr. Robert Millman, said during a bail hearing Cameron had agreed to testify against his suppliers.

"He broke his femur, which is hard to snap, and had to have a rod inserted," a prison source told the Post. "He told health services staff that he hurt [his leg and finger] playing handball. You don't break a femur playing handball."

The insider told the Post a doctor's aide misdiagnosed Cameron's broken leg and a blood clot developed.

"She thought it was a sprain, so he wants to sue this woman. He's still walking around on crutches two months later," the source told the newspaper, adding no one has been punished for Douglas' injuries.

Lohan belatedly thanks Sheen for $100K

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan took weeks to send a "thank you" note and flowers to Charlie Sheen after he gave her $100,000 to pay her back taxes, TMZ said.

Sheen, 47, complained in an interview last week that he hadn't heard from his "Scary Movie 5" co-star since he gave her the money to pay her bill.

Sources close to Lohan told TMZ the "Liz & Dick" actress didn't mean to be rude, but couldn't contact Sheen because her phone broke and she lost all of her numbers.

Lohan is a 26-year-old former child star whose once-bright career has been eclipsed in recent years by her legal and financial woes, as well as her battles with drugs and alcohol.

Middleton presents awards to athletes

LONDON, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Kate Middleton, the pregnant wife of Britain's Prince William, attended the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards show in London to present several awards.

People.com said she was on-hand at Sunday night's event to present awards to runner-turned-politician Sebastian Coe and cyclist Bradley Wiggins.

This was the 30-year-old duchess' first official appearance since leaving a hospital where she was treated for extreme morning sickness and dehydration.

"We're so delighted to be joined by Her Royal Highness the duchess of Cambridge," People.com reported host Gary Lineker telling the audience at the ExCeL arena.

William and Kate married in April 2011 and recently confirmed they are expecting their first child.

Their happy news was marred earlier this month, however, when a nurse who worked at the hospital where the duchess was being treated hanged herself after she was caught up in a radio prank in which she gave out information about Kate's condition to a woman pretending to be Queen Elizabeth II.
