NEW YORK, July 30 (UPI) -- Two-time Tony Award-winner Bebe Neuwirth is to star in the upcoming New York premiere of "Golden Age," a play by Terrence McNally.

Walter Bobbie is directing the show, which will begin previews Nov. 13 and open Dec. 4 in a limited engagement at MTC at New York City Center -- Stage I in Manhattan, producers announced Friday.

"It's opening night of Vincenzo Bellini's new opera 'I Puritani in Paris,' and the Italian composer is determined to win the adulation of not only his audience, but his colleagues and rivals as well. When the curtain falls, will a thunderous ovation cement his prominence? Or has Bellini unwittingly composed his own swan song?" a synopsis said. "Blending 21st century language and humor with the timeless beauty of 19th century bel canto opera, 'Golden Age,' portrays the final act of an artist whose desire for greatness has eclipsed all else."

Neuwirth will play Maria Malibran and Lorenzo Pisoni will play Antonio Tamburini, two well-known opera singers of the day. Additional casting for "Golden Age" will be announced shortly.

Neuwirth and Bobbie previously paired in the hit revival of "Chicago." The actress' other Broadway credits include "The Addams Family" and "Sweet Charity."

She also earned two Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Dr. Lillith Sternin-Craine on the sitcoms "Cheers" and "Frasier."

Pisoni has appeared in the New York stage productions of "Humor Abuse," "Measure for Measure" and "Equus."

McNally's plays include "Lips Together, Teeth Apart," "Love! Valour! Compassion!," "Kiss of the Spider Woman," "Master Class," "Ragtime" and "The Full Monty."
