NEW YORK, July 19 (UPI) -- The Royal Shakespeare Company's production of "Matilda the Musical" is to open on Broadway next spring, producers announced Thursday.

The stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's book will begin previews at the Shubert Theatre March 24 and open April 11.

Created by the RSC in 2010, "Matilda" earned seven 2012 Olivier Awards including Best Musical.

It is the story of "an extraordinary little girl who decides that despite a bad beginning filled with rotten parents, a terrifying school and a vicious headmistress, her story is going to be an astonishing one," a synopsis said. "With the help of her teacher, her friends and a little bit of imagination, Matilda proves that even if you're little, you can do big things."

Casting will be announced soon, the producers said.
