Jack Abramoff optimistic about radio gig

WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) -- Former U.S. lobbyist Jack Abramoff says he expects it will take some time for his new satellite radio talk show to gain traction.

Abramoff debuted on XM Satellite Radio earlier this summer in a rugged Sunday evening time slot, but he sees it as a solid jumping-off point.

"The hope in radio is to build an audience over a number of years," Abramoff told The Washington Post.

Abramoff served time in prison for his activities as a top-tier Beltway operative. He has since become a vocal critic of the Washington culture of back-scratching and revolving doors.

He recently wrote a book on the topic called "Capitol Punishment" but has otherwise been scrambling to make a living while owing millions in restitution to former clients.

The Post said Abramoff's performance on hundreds of radio appearances to promote his book brought him to the attention of Premier Networks, which also produces radio shows by conservative commentator Glenn Beck and liberal Randi Rhodes.

"The show is not really for people who want to rage," Abramoff said. "But if people have legitimate questions, I'm going to answer it."
