PRINCE CHARLES: British Prince Charles' spending increased 3.6 percent in 2011-12, the year his elder son Prince William married Kate Middleton, records show.

The Daily Telegraph said Charles spent $32 million in 2011-2012, compared to the $31 million he shelled out the previous year. His income from the Duchy of Cornwall and government grants increased by the same percentage.

The figures Clarence House released do not itemize the costs of the royal wedding or of the additional expense to the prince of having Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, as an extra member of the royal family, the newspaper said.

Royal aides told the Telegraph Charles shared about $785,000 in wedding costs with his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and Kate's family, while security and the participation of the armed forces for the high-profile ceremony were paid for with public funds.

Middleton does her best not to be a drain on her in-law's finances and does not have a dresser, butler or other personal servants among the nine staff who work for her, her husband and his brother Prince Harry. Charles pays for all outfits the Duchess of Cambridge wears on official engagements.

"The cost having an extra member of the family is not that much. Most of the travel the duchess has done has been with her husband, who would have been traveling anyway, so there's no extra cost there, and they share administrative staff," a royal insider told the newspaper. "When they host a reception at Clarence House, they will use the Prince of Wales' chefs and other staff."

'BATES MOTEL': A&E Network says it has ordered a series called "Bates Motel," based on the 1960 Hollywood film classic "Psycho."

Bob DeBitetto, president and general manager of A&E Network and BIO Channel, and the network's executive vice president of programming, David McKillop, announced Monday it had ordered the 10-episode first season of "Bates Motel" from Universal Television.

Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin are serving as executive producers. Preproduction and casting are to begin immediately.

"We are proud to be partnering with Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin on their thrilling reinvention of one of the most compelling characters in cinematic history," DeBitetto and McKillop said in a statement. "It's a provocative project from two of the best storytellers in the business and we're looking forward to getting started."

Cuse was a producer of the TV series "Lost" and "Nash Bridges." Ehrin's producing credits include the TV series "Parenthood" and "Friday Night Lights."

"Bates Motel" is inspired by Robert Bloch's 1959 novel and Alfred Hitchcock's genre-defining film, "Psycho," starring Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, John Gavin and Janet Leigh.

The TV show is described as "a contemporary exploration of the formative years of Norman Bates' relationship with his mother, Norma, and the world they inhabit," a synopsis said.

It is to premiere on the network in 2013.

TOM BERGERON: "Dancing with the Stars" host Tom Bergeron is to emcee "A Capitol Fourth," a holiday music program in Washington, PBS announced.

The July Fourth special is to include performances by Phillip Phillips, Matthew Broderick, Megan Hilty, Javier Colon, Josh Turner, Kool & The Gang, Kelli O'Hara, Russell Watson, Amber Riley and the National Symphony Orchestra.

The acts will be followed by a fireworks display. The program will air live in HD on PBS Wednesday.

"What an honor to be in the nation's capital for America's biggest birthday party," Bergeron said in a statement Monday. "Hosting 'A Capitol Fourth' enables me to celebrate two things I'm a big fan of -- America and PBS."

"We are thrilled that Tom Bergeron will lead our nation in this star-spangled celebration," said executive producer Jerry Colbert. "We are also humbled that the viewers have chosen this unique live television event as their favorite. With the eyes of America upon us, we join as one family to celebrate our freedoms, using the magical medium of television."
