NEW YORK, June 20 (UPI) -- The Great White Way was covered in yoga mats Wednesday as thousands of yogis descended on New York's Times Square to celebrate the summer solstice.

Organizers of "Solstice in Times Square: Athleta Mind Over Madness Yoga" said more than 14,000 people had pre-registered for four free classes held throughout the day on Broadway between 42nd and 47th streets. Walk-ins were accommodated when possible.

"Attendees will be challenged to find tranquility and transcendence in the midst of the world's most commercial and frenetic place, Times Square," the official Times Square Web site said. "Thousands of yoga enthusiasts will celebrate the longest day of the year with an all-day yoga fest. Join us as we come together for a collective 'ohm' in the middle of Times Square."
